3 SMEs is the conventional wisdom, but it turns out it varies from 1 to 6 depending on whether you're talking action steps, decision steps, indications, contraindications, etc. It was a surprising result. I'm guessing the paper is going to spark a few citations and arguments.

He's going to stick with USC, and he's got some symposia and conferences scheduled out of town.

I've told him that since he's a doctah he needn't put audiences to sleep with his presentations, he can anaesthetize them.

Nice. So did he get a clean solution? ("Three subject matter experts")

Does he know what his next stop is, or is going to enjoy the title for a little while first?

Thanks. Datsa my boy! The degree is in higher education administration, but his research was about determining the point of diminishing returns in the number of subject matter experts in a cognitive task analysis: economics applied to ed psych. He knew virtually nothing about ed psych and figured "this might be fun." So he talked the ed psych people in the School of Education into advising him and letting him take the appropriate coursework.
